Import a Project

Note:

The project export option creates an XML file that includes the complete set of project data. Recommend only using an XML file created from the project export option to import data into a project. You can use the XML export and import options to create a new project. As an alternative, you can also copy a project to create a new project. See Copy a Project.

  1. Select Project Data > Projects in the Navigation Menu. The Manage Projects tab window displays.
  2. Click Import in the Ribbon Menu and then click From XML. A separate Import From XML window displays.
  3. Click on the File ellipsis button to navigate to the XML file you want to import.
  4. Select the file and click Open. The data from the XML file populates the rows in the window. At a minimum, this includes the assigned account structures (WBS) and project structures (calendar, rates, and resources). It may also include user defined code structures and account or work package documents for the project. There are four columns in the window: Select, From, To, and Action. Any items with a Select column check box enabled can be checked or unchecked to control what is imported. The From and To columns display the name of the project, structures, or documents. By default the Action column displays the text "Overwrite" in red.
  5. You have two options when you import the data.

Option 1 - Overwrite the data. In the Import From XML window:

  1. For each applicable row, accept the default Overwrite column Action.
  2. Optional. For any enabled Select column check box, click to deselect content you don't want to import.

Option 2 - Create a new project and related structures. In the Import from XML window:

  1. For each applicable row, enter a new name for project, project structure, or code structure in the To column. The Action column automatically updates to read "Create New."
  2. Optional. For any enabled Select column check box, click to deselect content you don't want to import.
  1. Click Import. The import process completes and returns to the Manage Projects tab window.
  2. Optional. Close the Manage Projects tab.
